My 6th graders are creating slideshows made from still pictures. I posted the assignment in edmodo, which I have used since the beginning of the year.
The students love it - "It's like a lame facebook," explained one KMS 8th grader.
Their first step was to brainstorm. I forgot about Popplet, so I searched for a site that would let the students create their mindmapping without creating an account. Bubbl.us was one of the only sites I found. The students had a good time with the name! They just clicked on the START BRAINSTORMING button and went to work. My instructions were to, "just play with it." Well, they did. They created all sorts of shapes, characters, and objects with the bubbles!
Well, Bubbl.us doesn't do near as much as Popplet or the Mindmodo in Creaza, it serves its purpose. It makes bubbles and you can write in them - showing the relationships. The students thought this was kind of lame, as did I. This generation is used to all the bells and whistles. They want it to be easy, with lots of pictures, and be entertaining. After their complaining, the students did get down to business and create their mindmaps for their slideshows.
Now for the saving... Hmmm. I have to have an account in order to save it so you can edit again. But, I can export it as a .jpg file. I had all of the students export and "turn in" the assignment as an attachment to the assignment I made in edmodo. I had one person in the group attach it and the others say who in their group did this. Worked like a charm! Well, next time I will use Mindmodo or Popplet. Not only because they can do more in the mindmapping, but to also show the students there is more than one site out in the world wide web that will do this sort of thing!
