What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education

Here is a simple list of the Web 2.0 tools I have used in my classroom...so far...
I will add to it as I try out new tools

Tools I have used include:

  • edmodo - Edmodo is a free online classroom communications tool for teachers and students to share notes, files, links, and assignments similar to Twitter or Facebook. My student's refer to it as a "lame facebook!"
  • BeFunky - BeFunky develops innovative digital media tools that let people become instant artists and express themselves creatively without the need for any technical knowledge. This is a class favorite!
  • SUMOPaint - SUMO Paint is a free image editing software that gives you the opportunity to create and edit images and drawings online. The students love the symmetry tool!
  • Photoshop Express - Adobe Photoshop Express is a free, flash-based image editing web application from Adobe. The students found this easy to use, but the application was slow when more than 10 students used it at once. Probably our school connection!
  • Bubbl.us - Bubbl.us is a concept mapping web 2.0 application, similar to Inspiration, that allows the user to make graphical representations of ideas. The students thought this was a neat one to use to help them study for tests.
  • Big Huge Labs Trading Cards - Big Huge Labs itself is a great site to turn your photos into puzzles, movies, blogger heads, and all kinds of other cools stuff. My students used the trading cards to create characters, settings and events for a story they wrote.
  • Typingweb - Typingweb helps you learn to type and you can play typing games online for free. Get officially certified for your typing and 10 key skills. This is the typing program I have my students use. I have one student typing at 102 wpm with 99% accuracy! He is the top typer on typing web right now!
  • Wordle - Wordle is a  tag cloud or word cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, typically used to describe the content of web sites.
  • Prezi - Prezi is a web-based presentation application and storytelling tool that uses a single canvas instead of traditional slides. Text, images, videos and other presentation objects are placed on the infinite canvas and grouped together in frames. The students loved designing with this!
  • Kerpoof - Kerpoof's multimedia software is used to create original artwork, animated movies, stories, greeting cards and more. I mainly use this with my special education students. They love it!
  • GoogleDocs - Google Docs is a free, web-based office suite, and data storage service offered by Google. The students love the idea that they can access it form anywhere, and use it for collaboration.
  • GoogleEarth - Google Earth allows you to travel the world through a virtual globe and view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, and much more.
  • Popplet - Popplet is a fantastic organizational, brainstorming tool. It allows you to search Flickr right inside the site so you know you are using royalty free images. In addition, you can get items from Facebook and Youtube, as well as your computer.

  • Here is a link to a searchable database I began. It lists tools, grade level, subject and a brief description. Searchable Web 2.0 DatabaseI add to this on a monthly basis.

What's on the horizon?
The up and coming Web 3.0 will be about a semantic web (or the meaning of data), personalization (e.g. iGoogle), intelligent search, and behavioral advertising among other things. There is a wide variety of opinions as to what Web 3.0 will ultimately look like.
