Welcome to my 3 part series on learning Adobe Premiere
I have been working with Adobe Premiere for awhile, and most of what I have learned is through trial and error. I wanted to go through the Lynda.com tutorials to learn more.
For this session I went through the Introduction, Importing, and some Basic Video Editing.
The introduction and importing showed me nothing new, which I was happy that I was doing it right. Where I learned some new techniques was in the Basic Video Editing section. I was unaware that after you import a video you need to create a new sequence, and it must match your main footage. This explains why I was having trouble with my technology video. The footage and sequence where set up differently and my shots where showing up really small. Duh!
A second thing I learned, was how to automatically sequence video clips. I was sequencing the clips in the time line. The tutorial showed me how to organize my clips before it gets to the timeline. Usually my clips are shown in a list mode and I changed it to icon mode and it shows up as little boxes. I move these around in the order I want them - like a story. I select automate to sequence and a box appears. I like that I can choose to automatically add audio and video transitions or not. Time saver!
During the basic editing, it looked like I was doing things right. I did learn more about a couple of the little tools in the editing window - overlay and insert. In my version, I had OVERWRIGHT not OVERLAY. I am guessing that these were the same. The overwright worked like the tutorial said. If you want your video to stay the same length and want to replace content, use overwright. If you want your video to be longer and want to insert a clip into another clip, use insert. Pretty Handy!
Stay tuned for part 2: More editing and adding effects!
